Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
Crossvine Church is an LGBT-welcoming, humanist-friendly interfaith ministry based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and serving Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. We are are affiliated with the American Association of Wedding Officiants, Fig Street Ministry, and the Association of Independent Churches, and are the area's leading provider of sacred music, non-denominational ceremonies. and pastoral counseling services.
Our Pastor, Reverend James Ramsey, is an ordained Interfaith Minister who holds a Ph.D. in Pastoral Counseling from the Esoteric Interfaith Theological Seminary and a Master of Education degree in Community Counseling from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and is co-moderator for Region 4 of the American Association of Wedding Officiants. He is legally authorized to solemnize marriages in Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama, and regards himself as a dedicated, dependable, easy-going professional.
Founded upon the "church without walls" model (Matthew 16:18) and acknowledging that we are called to be agents of common grace (Psalm 24:1), the mission of Crossvine Church is to support people in living spiritually fulfilling lives, while serving all people with respect and dignity, regardless of their beliefs or sexual orientation. Grounded in the perennial philosophy, and with a focus on interspirituality, our ministry represents a movement beyond dogma and artificial divisions between sacred and secular, toward direct experience of the Divine reality through present moment awareness. "Worship" is thus seen as synonymous with a model of pastoral care which encompasses every aspect of our daily lives (Exodus 3:5), and it is in this context that we perform the sacerdotal duties of the ministry.
The logo of Crossvine Church is the Celtic Cross entwined by the crossvine (Bignonia capreolata), a perennial climbing woody vine native to the Central and Southern United States. The Celtic Cross represents "the human desire to know and experience the unfolding experience of life [and a] meeting of the Divine energies" (Avia Venifica), while crossvine's healing properties and orange-red trumpet flowers symbolize the timeless beauty of the Tennessee Valley ecosystem in which our ministry finds its home.
Originally founded in 2013 as Chattanooga Wedding Officiants, our initial focus was on providing high quality wedding officiant services to couples of diverse belief systems. Based on the feedback we received, however, it soon became clear that there was a need for an expanded mission which would enable us to embrace a broader role in helping to bridge the gaps within the spiritual life of our community. In response to this call—and inspired by the work of J. Krishnamurti, David Bohm, and Toni Packer—we sought to create a space in which people of diverse beliefs might meet for open dialogue and explore the possibility of living together at higher levels of consciousness. To wit, on July 14th, 2015, Crossvine Church was established as a reflection of this expanded mission.
While Chattanooga Wedding Officiants continues as Crossvine's wedding officiant ministry, we now emphasize a commitment to community service through participation in interfaith events and by offering a comprehensive array of ceremonies (including commitment ceremonies, vow renewals, handfastings, baby dedications, baptism, funeral ceremonies, seasonal celebrations, humanist life-cycle ceremonies, and many other rites of passage). In addition, we have established a music ministry, a senior pastoral care ministry, and an outreach program for incarcerated people. Our long-term goal is to establish a center where people from all faiths might come together to connect with each other in silent retreat, participate in holistic workshops, join in seasonal celebration rituals, and engage in group dialogue, allowing for the emergence of new insights into the significance of life.
